Spoiler Alert! A surprising storyline, which reveals the backstory to the main characters in a "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz!" Broadway's Wicked takes you on a spectacular, heartfelt journey pre-Dorothy and the yellow brick road! There's no "Auntie Em, Auntie Em" in this story. A magnificent play reflecting the emotional voyage the Wicked Witch of the West! The storyline reveals the reasoning behind Elphaba's actions in turning good people into what we know as the Scarecrow, the Tinman, and the Cowardly Lion. Living with unusual green skin and rather strange features, Elphaba's life is no walk in the park.
If you see the show without knowledge of the storyline, you are in for a great surprise. Elphaba has absolutely no intentions of evil deeds. She often finds herself in dreadful situations, while being mistreated and awfully misunderstood. As explained by the writers, the play distinguishes between, "good intentions with bad results" and "bad intentions with bad results." In Elphaba's case, the first makes live her life story. With this in mind, it is also discovered that the Wonderful Wizard of Oz is not so wonderful at all. Conflicts arise as the plot thickens. Elphaba struggles with persuasion and gaining trust. With common stereotypes and unfortunate gossip circling the town, finding a loyal friend is difficult to achieve.
Wicked further reveals the intense relationship between Elphaba and Glinda, the Good Witch of the South. Glinda, formerly Galinda, is depicted as a "dumb blonde" princess. In a school setting with immature remarks and drama, Glinda and Elphaba eventually develop a close relationship. Although the relationship is compromised, the ending delivers a delightful truth and an everlasting friendship between two very different personalities! A shared song between the two, "Defying Gravity", is the sensational finale depicting heroism and bravery. Absolutely breathtaking! Bravo!
There is no wicked in this Wicked. I greatly enjoyed Elphaba's personal journey through the ups and downs of daily situations. It sure is not easy being green! Love Always, Mia.
